Where Black workers appear, they are often discussed in the context of discrimination and barriers to advancement rather than as creators of value. Because patents, carrier logos and regulatory records attach credit to corporations and equipment designers, the on‑the‑ground problem solving of Black drivers and shop crews goes unrecorded. Yet oral histories, union minutes, and coverage in Black newspapers document their central role in making refrigerated trucking workable under real‑world conditions.
6.Testimony, Archives and the Pattern of Theft
Evidence for Black authorship in refrigerated trucking lives in scattered archives: International Brotherhood of Teamsters minutes and oral history collections, local Black press accounts of trucking strikes and driver heroism, family papers from Black‑owned carriers, and church funeral programs that list occupational histories. These sources consistently depict Black drivers and mechanics as the people who kept produce moving through climates and enforcement regimes designed to punish them.
The archive treats this testimony as primary evidence. The absence of Black names from patents or corporate engineering departments reflects hiring discrimination and the formal exclusion of Black workers from design credit, not a lack of invention. Where a system’s functioning depended on Black expertise exercised daily without official recognition, we apply the presumption of authorship: Black drivers and mechanics who solved the equipment and logistics problems of refrigerated trucking are co‑authors of the system itself.
7.What Remains Unwritten
Many small haulers never registered their companies beyond basic business filings. Shop modifications were rarely documented in engineering journals. As older drivers, dispatchers and mechanics pass, unrecorded knowledge leaves with them. This loss is part of the mismanagement of history: trade publications and corporate histories did not seek out Black voices when writing the story of refrigerated trucking, and so the record is partial.
The archive therefore holds space for ongoing recovery of names and specific innovations from oral history projects, union archives and Black business collections. It asserts the pattern—the centrality of Black expertise—while inviting further documentation to deepen and refine the story.
The archive holds refrigerated produce trucking as a system co‑authored by Black labor and ingenuity, not merely an industry that employed Black workers. Black drivers, dispatchers and mechanics demonstrated a continual mastery of route logistics, weather, equipment limitations and safety under segregation, transforming experimental refrigeration units into reliable tools of commerce. Their work sustained growers, urban retailers and ultimately consumers, yet corporate and regulatory histories rarely name them as creators of value. We recognize Black trucking communities as technical and logistical innovators whose improvisations and route knowledge kept food moving and made the cold chain flexible. Treating them as replaceable labor rather than authors of a transportation system is an erasure the archive corrects.
