Official commemorations of the Manhattan Project focus on scientific breakthroughs and strategic outcomes, rarely mentioning the Black neighborhoods that existed in Oak Ridge or the Black workers who once staffed Hanford’s vast complex.
Family stories, local Black church records and oral history projects have begun to preserve these experiences. They recount pride in contributing to the war effort alongside frustration at segregation and silence. The archive treats these testimonies as essential sources, correcting an imbalance where the memory of nuclear innovation has been effectively decoupled from the Black lives that sustained it. Recognizing Black participation changes the moral and social landscape of the Manhattan Project, making visible the people who helped usher in the nuclear age without being named in its official record.

Their contributions and the racial order imposed on them reveal the Manhattan Project as a site where American scientific ambition and segregationist policy were fused, shaping both the weapons and the world they entered.
