1.The record
Across Oak Ridge, Hanford, and other Manhattan Project locations, Black workers lived in segregated barracks, performed some of the most dangerous and least recognized jobs, and endured pay discrimination and restricted mobility under explicit federal policy. Their labor kept reactors running, construction on schedule, and security enforced—conditions without which the Project’s technical achievements would have remained paper designs.
2.Building the atomic infrastructure
The Manhattan Project required an immense physical infrastructure: secret cities, sprawling plants, and elaborate transportation networks. Black workers were recruited into the construction and maintenance of these facilities, often through the Army Corps of Engineers and civilian contractors who applied Jim Crow hiring and housing practices to federal war work. In places like Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Black laborers built roads, foundations, and housing; Black domestics cleaned and supported white families brought in for scientific work.
While official reports celebrate visionary leadership and engineering, they rarely name the Black crews whose manual and semi-skilled labor transformed remote landscapes into functioning research and production centers. That erasure mirrors broader patterns in U.S. industrial history, where Black workers are visible in payrolls and photographs but missing from the narrative of innovation, even when their reliability under harsh conditions made ambitious projects feasible.
3.Segregation, policy, and risk
Federal policy imported Jim Crow into the Manhattan Project’s core. Black workers were confined to “Colored” neighborhoods and barracks, denied access to many amenities, and assigned jobs that combined low status with high risk. Guards, janitors, construction laborers, and certain plant operators spent long hours near radioactive materials and chemical hazards without being told the nature of their exposure or given equal protection.
These workers were essential to keeping the plants operating safely enough for production to continue. They monitored gauges, performed routine maintenance, and managed waste under strict discipline, all inside a security regime that treated them as expendable labor rather than as participants in scientific work. The archive holds that the Project’s successful output of fissile material depended substantially on this labor, even as Black workers’ names rarely appear in official histories except as anonymous figures in background photographs.
4.Scientific credit and racial exclusion
The standard telling of the Manhattan Project centers white scientists—Oppenheimer, Fermi, Szilard, and others—as the authors of the bomb, with occasional mention of white women in computational or clerical roles. Black participation is largely omitted, giving the impression that Black Americans had no meaningful relationship to the creation of nuclear weapons beyond later civil rights protest.
Yet Black soldiers guarded critical sites, Black drivers and logistics workers moved materials, and Black technicians and machinists contributed to the smooth functioning of laboratories and plants. They were excluded from principal investigator roles, scientific authorship on reports, and the postwar networks of prestige and funding that shaped American science. That exclusion was not a reflection of lack of ability; it was the product of military segregation, discriminatory hiring, and the broader structure of U.S. higher education that kept Black students out of many physics and engineering programs.
5.Communities at the edge of the blast
Black communities also bore the downstream effects of the Manhattan Project. In the American South and West, Black and other marginalized residents often lived near disposal sites and transport routes, increasing their exposure to radioactive and chemical waste. Within the military, Black veterans who had served at Project sites returned to segregated hospitals and the VA system, where their health complaints were frequently minimized.
The Project’s triumph is typically narrated as a story of scientific genius and patriotic sacrifice ending with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The archive insists on adding the story of Black workers whose bodies and neighborhoods were part of the hidden cost of nuclear development, and whose contributions made the work possible even as they were structurally denied the ability to share in its scientific or political rewards.
6.Legacy and memory
The Manhattan Project helped define modern American science, national security policy, and global power. Its veterans went on to lead laboratories, universities, and agencies. Black workers, by contrast, returned to civilian life with little public acknowledgment, their stories preserved mainly in family memory, local Black newspapers, and scattered oral histories.
In recent years, a small but growing body of scholarship and public history has begun to recover these lives, documenting Black presence in wartime plants and the racialized structure of federal science work. The archive treats their labor as integral to the Project’s success, not as a footnote, and reads their near-absence from official commemorations as part of a broader pattern in which Black contributions to large-scale technological systems are systematically under-recorded while risks are unevenly borne.
The archive holds the Manhattan Project as a monumental scientific undertaking whose success rested on the invisible backbone of Black labor and service, even as the official honor roll is almost exclusively white and male. The Project’s stature in national mythology as a pinnacle of American ingenuity is therefore incomplete without naming the Black workers and soldiers who made its infrastructure and security real. Black Americans attached to the Project stand not as passive bystanders to history but as active contributors who navigated segregation, danger, and secrecy to keep an unprecedented enterprise running. Their exclusion from scientific authorship and postwar recognition is itself evidence of the racial structure of American science, not of an absence of Black participation or capacity. The archive judges the Manhattan Project’s dominant narrative as a textbook case of selective memory: it canonizes genius while obscuring the racialized labor system that sustained it. Restoring Black workers to the story is not an act of generosity; it is a correction demanded by the evidence of who built and guarded the world’s first nuclear arsenal.
