Garrett Augustus Morgan was born on 4 March 1877 in Claysville, near Paris, Kentucky, to Elizabeth Reed and Sidney Morgan, both formerly enslaved people who labored on local farms. He grew up in a rural environment where work was constant and formal schooling scarce, completing only a few years of elementary education before leaving home as a teenager. When he moved first to Cincinnati and then to Cleveland, Ohio, he entered the urban industrial economy through **sewing machine repair**, discovering that he could diagnose and improve mechanical systems despite his limited schooling.

By the early 1900s, Morgan had established his own sewing machine repair shop in Cleveland, then expanded into a tailoring business that manufactured clothing. In 2005, his induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame marked partial institutional recognition of his role in public safety engineering, echoing what Black archives had documented for decades.
