1.The Modern Self-Wringing Mop
In 1990, Joy Mangano filed U.S. Patent No. 5,094,457 for a “Self-Wringing Mop” that became known commercially as the Miracle Mop. The patent describes a mop with a continuous looped head made of synthetic fibers, attached to a handle incorporating a sliding sleeve and locking mechanism. When the user pulls the sleeve upward, it compresses the mop head, wringing out water without direct hand contact.
The design addressed specific pain points in domestic work: exposure to dirty water, repetitive bending and twisting, and the difficulty of efficiently removing water from absorbent mop heads. Mangano’s device offered a cleaner, more ergonomic process, making it possible to mop large areas without the physical toll that traditional string mops and rags imposed.

2.Lineage in Black Domestic Labor
Long before the Miracle Mop, Black women working as domestic laborers in white households and in their own homes had developed informal systems for cleaning floors without direct contact with dirty water. Oral histories and WPA slave narratives describe the use of layered rags, improvised stick-and-cloth tools, and hand-built wringing devices fashioned from household materials.
Church women’s club minutes and domestic manuals produced by Black authors in the early twentieth century document cleaning techniques that minimized stooping and wet-hand contact, often by twisting cloths around sticks and using foot pressure or makeshift rollers to wring water. These records show that the underlying concept of a tool that keeps the worker’s hands relatively clean and dry is much older than the 1990 patent.
Because enslaved and later domestic workers had limited or no access to the patent system, their devices and techniques did not enter the official record as “inventions.” Instead, their tools were treated as mere household ingenuity, even when they embodied mechanical insight and problem-solving comparable to recognized industrial inventions.
3.Mismanagement and Erasure in Technology Histories
Standard histories of cleaning technology often focus on vacuum cleaners and washing machines, crediting male engineers and major appliance companies. Mops are typically treated as secondary or “low” technology, with few named inventors attached to their evolution. Where patents for mop improvements are noted, they are rarely contextualized within the labor systems that made the devices necessary and that refined their use.
This mismanagement obscures the fact that domestic tools are as much a part of technological progress as industrial machinery. It also erases the racialized and gendered labor that drove their development and improvement. Black domestic workers, constrained by racism and sexism, were rarely in a position to claim patents or be named as inventors, even when they were the primary designers and testers of new methods.
Mangano’s mop enters a landscape in which the official record recognizes very few individual authors for domestic cleaning devices. The archive reads that silence as a structural omission, not as evidence that Black and working-class women did not invent.
4.Mangano’s Invention and Black Authorship
Joy Mangano’s documented invention does not cancel or replace the many anonymous devices before it; instead, it provides a concrete case study of how a domestic worker’s perspective can translate into engineering. Mangano’s own accounts emphasize that she invented the mop out of frustration with existing tools while raising children and working multiple jobs—conditions shared by many Black women whose innovations remained within the home.
Her success demonstrates what happens when a domestic tool is treated as worthy of patenting and mass production: the inventor gains recognition and financial return, and the users gain a safer, easier way to complete a necessary task. The archive holds that similar opportunities would have existed for countless Black domestic workers had the patent system and business environment been open to them.

5.The Domestic Mop as Technology

Improvements in its design affect health outcomes, time use, and physical strain. For Black households historically exposed to poor housing conditions and limited access to medical care, such tools were central to survival.
Black-authored domestic manuals and cookbooks often contain detailed guidance on floor cleaning, stain removal, and tool maintenance, reflecting an expertise in material interaction that parallels industrial chemistry and engineering. The failure of mainstream science histories to treat these texts as technical sources is itself a form of erasure.
By insisting that the domestic mop and its self-wringing variants belong in the same archive of invention as rail technology or medical devices, this record asserts that Black and female inventors in the home have been key engineers of everyday life. Their work made cleanliness and bodily integrity possible under conditions of constraint and exploitation.
6.Toward a Fuller Record
Recovering the history of domestic tools requires attention to sources outside patent registers: oral histories, family stories, church records, Black newspapers, and community archives. These sources document both specific devices and the logics behind them, including the priorities of safety, speed, and dignity in cleaning work.
The Miracle Mop is one of a small number of domestic cleaning inventions whose author we can name and whose mechanism we can parse in technical detail. It is therefore a starting point, not an endpoint, for reconstructing Black and working-class women’s broader technological contributions to the home.
The archive holds this record open, inviting further documentation of named and unnamed inventors whose mops, brooms, and improvised tools deserve recognition as part of the history of science and invention—not as footnotes to it.
