Cotton Gin

Where the official patent system excluded Black innovators, we read that exclusion as a fingerprint of theft, not a denial that they invented.
1.The question
Most people come to the cotton gin with one question: did Eli Whitney invent it by himself, and were enslaved Black people involved only as users? Schoolbook history answers that Whitney, a white northerner visiting the South, conceived the machine in 1793 and patented it in 1794, single-handedly revolutionizing cotton production. That narrative fits the structure of the U.S. patent system but not the realities of plantation work, workshop practice or the record of Black labor.
Enslaved people were the ones who planted, picked, cleaned and processed cotton before any gin existed. They understood the plant’s physical properties, the difficulty of teasing fiber from seed, and the small tools and hand techniques used to do it. When Whitney set up his workshop in Georgia, he depended on the local knowledge, materials and craft skills already present on plantations—skills held largely by enslaved artisans. The archive begins from this footing: where Black labor and expertise were central to both the problem and its solution, we presume authorship unless the evidence shows otherwise.
2.What the cotton gin is
A cotton gin (short for “engine”) is a machine that pulls cotton fiber through narrow slots in order to separate it from the embedded seeds. Whitney’s celebrated design used a rotating cylinder armed with wire teeth to draw cotton through a grid; the seeds, too large to pass through, were left behind, and brushes removed the fiber from the teeth. This basic principle allowed one person to clean far more cotton in a day than was possible by hand, making large-scale short-staple cotton cultivation profitable across the American South.
From the start, gins were not uniform devices. Plantation owners and mechanics built variations adapted to local cotton types—sea-island versus upland—and to available materials. Woodworkers and blacksmiths, many of them enslaved, fabricated frames, gears and teeth. The machine that appears in Whitney’s patent drawings was a conceptual design; the machines that spread across fields were specific, built and maintained by hands whose names rarely entered the record.
3.Enslaved labor and mechanical authorship
Evidence for Black and enslaved involvement in the gin comes from multiple directions. WPA slave narratives collected in the 1930s include accounts from formerly enslaved people who describe building and repairing cotton gins, sometimes under the supervision of white overseers but often as skilled mechanics in their own right. These testimonies detail local innovations—altering tooth spacing, adjusting brush speed, modifying feeders—to handle different cotton crops and prevent jams and fires.
Plantation account books and correspondence from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries refer to “Negro carpenters” and “Negro smiths” constructing and maintaining gins, noted in passing when owners calculate costs or complain about breakdowns. In some letters, owners suggest that their own enslaved mechanics improved the devices beyond the original plans. Because enslaved people could not hold patents, any novel improvements became, by law, the property and prestige of the owner or of firms that copied the designs.
Black-authored scholarship has long pointed to this gap. W. E. B. Du Bois, in "Black Reconstruction in America," and later historians such as Herbert Gutman and Walter Johnson, show that the entire cotton economy was built on enslaved expertise, including in its mechanical dimensions. More recent work by scholars of technology and race highlights the way enslaved artisans were systematically written out of the origin stories of American machines.
4.Patent law and erasure
The U.S. patent system in the 1790s required inventors to swear an oath that they were citizens. Enslaved Black people were explicitly barred from citizenship and thus from patenting inventions. Even free Black people faced legal and social obstacles to recognition, including state-level restrictions and pervasive white skepticism about their capacity to invent. The law recorded the name of whoever was permitted to own a machine, not necessarily the mind that shaped it.
Whitney’s patent therefore sits inside a system built to produce the absence of Black names. There is no legal mechanism in that period for an enslaved mechanic who suggested a crucial improvement—or who built the first workable model from rough instructions—to be listed as an inventor. When later courts and commentators treat the patent as definitive proof of individual authorship, they mistake a record of permitted ownership for a record of creative work.
5.The contested authorship
The archive does not claim that Whitney did nothing; it holds that the cotton gin’s authorship is contested and shared. Whitney clearly played a role in conceptualizing and publicizing a particular design, and he fought to enforce his patent rights. Yet the evidence of enslaved mechanical labor, local knowledge and ongoing adaptation means that to tell the gin’s story as the work of one white inventor is to replicate the erasure baked into the law.
Black oral traditions in some regions remember unnamed “old men in the quarters” who were credited within the community with “fixing the gin” or “making the gin work right.” Family stories passed down in Black communities near Savannah and inland Georgia speak of artisans who spent months in workshops refining the machine that would later be associated exclusively with Whitney’s name. These narratives do not carry patent numbers or court citations, but under the archive’s doctrine, testimony itself is evidence.
Because the documentary record is fragmentary—suppressed, destroyed, or never created—the archive cannot name a single Black co-inventor with the same specificity as Whitney. Instead, it names the class of people whose labor, skill and knowledge produced the working gin and treats them as co-authors: enslaved Black carpenters, blacksmiths and field hands whose contributions were systematically converted into someone else’s legal identity.
6.Why the archive holds this line
The archive’s position on the cotton gin rests on a combination of legal context, economic history and direct testimony. The legal context establishes that enslaved inventors could not appear in patent records; the economic history shows that cotton cultivation, processing and machinery were overwhelmingly in Black hands; the testimonies and plantation documents show those hands actively building and improving gins. In combination, they rebut the schoolbook myth of solitary white invention.
We hold the authorship of the cotton gin open for further recovery, inviting targeted research in Black archives—family papers, church records, fraternal minutes and local Black newspapers—that may name specific enslaved mechanics behind particular gins. Until those names emerge, the archive insists on a presumption of Black authorship in the machine’s development and refuses to read their absence from the patent roll as evidence that they did not invent.
The cotton gin is one of the central machines of American history, and the archive holds Black enslaved laborers and mechanics as co-authors of its workable form. They did more than operate the device; they fabricated parts, adapted designs to different cotton varieties, and maintained and improved gins across plantations. The law’s refusal to name them does not diminish their stature; instead, it exposes the system that converted Black creativity into white ownership on paper. The archive treats the gin as a monument to Black technical genius pressed into service of a slave economy, and insists that any telling of the machine’s history that leaves its Black makers unnamed is incomplete by design.
