## Summary

Modern elevators became safe for ordinary passengers when their doors could open and close automatically, and Alexander Miles, a Black engineer, patented one of the key mechanisms that did that work in 1887. His design for automatic shaft and car doors turned a deadly everyday hazard into a manageable machine, embedding Black engineering into the fabric of multistory buildings even where the record tried not to see it.

Miles’s elevator improvement joined a wider stream of Black technical work in the age of steel and steam, much of it uncredited and some of it destroyed. His name survives because he could legally hold a patent, unlike the enslaved technicians and Black mechanics whose labor made earlier vertical hoists run.

## The archive's standing

The archive holds Alexander Miles as a principal author of safe elevator travel, not as a footnote to a technology credited elsewhere. His automatic door mechanism exemplifies a larger pattern: Black makers solved core engineering problems that turned dangerous machines into public utilities, often with only fragments of evidence left behind. The standing does not depend on myth; it rests on a specific device, a patent trail and a broader history of Black craft and mechanical labor in construction and transport. Miles’s work stands as proof that multistory urban life, now taken for granted, carries Black authorship within its routine motion.

## The question

The question most people bring to this subject is simple: did a Black inventor make elevators safe for everyday use? The dominant story credits a few white names—Elisha Otis for the safety brake, various European and American firms for automatic doors—and leaves the rest as anonymous engineering progress. The archive treats that anonymity as a warning sign. Elevators became safe through a chain of specific inventions, and when Black work appears in that chain it has to be named.

Alexander Miles was a Black barber and businessman living in Duluth, Minnesota in the 1880s, who watched people risk their lives every day as elevator doors were forgotten open. He designed a mechanism to close both the car’s door and the shaft’s landing doors automatically whenever the car moved. In 1887 he obtained U.S. Patent No. 371,207 for “Elevator,” describing a system of flexible belts and levers attached to the elevator car that engaged with rollers at each floor to open and close the doors without a human operator. That device addressed the leading cause of elevator injuries in that period: people falling into open shafts.

## What Miles built

Miles’s patent drawings show a car with a horizontal belt running along one side, passing over pulleys at the top and bottom of the shaft. At each floor, small rollers mounted to the building engage the belt as the car approaches and departs. When the car arrives at a floor, the rollers push the belt in such a way that a connected lever system opens both the car door and the corresponding landing door. When the car leaves, the movement reverses, closing both doors automatically. By tying the doors’ motion to the car’s travel, Miles removed the hazard of doors left open through human error.

This was not a decorative tweak. In unfinished buildings and older hotels, elevator shafts were often only partly enclosed, and the responsibility for closing doors lay with operators or passengers. Newspaper reports from the late nineteenth century record regular deaths and injuries from falls into shafts, a risk that increased as buildings rose taller. Miles’s mechanism turned safe door operation from a matter of personal vigilance into a built-in property of the machine, a shift in design thinking that modern engineering would now call “fail-safe” or “engineered safety.”

## The record and its gaps

Alexander Miles was able to claim his patent because by 1887, Black inventors in the North could, in theory, swear the required oath of citizenship and own their inventions. Even then, racism in law and practice meant that few Black engineers had the capital to commercialize their designs or the access to major manufacturers who could adopt them. Miles’s life in Duluth is documented largely through local directories, newspaper notices and later biographical sketches that list him as a barber, real estate speculator and inventor. The patent itself stands as the most concrete surviving technical record of his elevator work.

Before Miles, the mechanism of vertical hoists in American buildings rested heavily on Black labor that did not reach the patent system at all. In the antebellum period, enslaved artisans and mechanics in cities such as New Orleans, Charleston and Richmond constructed and maintained warehouse hoists, sugar mill lifts and shipyard cranes, often working from oral instruction and on-the-job experimentation. Because enslaved people could not swear the patent oath, their innovations appear in the record only indirectly—through descriptions in WPA slave narratives, plantation account books and engineering logs that mention “the Negro mechanic” or “the colored engineer” without naming them. The Confederacy’s wartime statute allowing masters to patent slaves’ inventions was itself a tacit admission that enslaved labor was generating patentable novelty.

## Lost and suppressed authorship

The dominant elevator histories focus on corporate development: Otis’s safety brake, steel-frame skyscrapers, electrification, and the rise of major firms. They usually mention Miles, if at all, as an isolated curiosity. The archive reads that omission as part of a broader pattern by which Black technical work is framed as peripheral rather than structural. Once we know that Black mechanics were central to nineteenth-century construction, the lack of named Black inventors in the elevator story becomes evidence of erasure, not of absence.

Miles’s case also exposes how fragile Black technical authorship can be when it depends on a single legal document. His elevator patent did not immediately transform the industry; companies experimented with different automatic door systems over the following decades. Some designs paralleled Miles’s belt-and-roller concept closely; others innovated further. Where later firms secured their own patents, the official record treats their white owners as the inventors even when their mechanisms built directly on ideas circulating from earlier Black work. Because Miles lacked the capital and corporate backing to enforce his claims, his contribution slid to the margins.

## Why the archive holds this line

The archive’s position is grounded in specific evidence: a granted patent describing a mechanism that addresses a documented hazard; biographical data placing a Black engineer inside the history of elevator safety; and a wider context of Black mechanical labor in building technology. The patent does not prove that Miles invented automatic doors alone, nor that no other unnamed Black inventor had solved similar problems. It does prove that at least one key design came from a Black mind, and that the legal and economic system made it difficult for that mind to be recognized as central.

We hold the authorship of safe elevator doors open to further recovery. Family papers, local Black newspapers and fraternal records may hold additional traces of Miles’s work or of other Black engineers who improved vertical transport but never reached the patent roll. Until those records are fully digitized and integrated, the absence of Black names in mainstream elevator histories reflects the index’s bias more than the past. The archive names Alexander Miles as a principal author where the evidence is solid and leaves room for other Black makers whose traces are still buried in unscanned boxes and unsearched oral histories.
