1.The Problem Miles Set Out to Solve
Nineteenth‑century elevators were hazardous machines. In most buildings, individual floor doors to the shaft had to be opened and closed manually, often by human operators who were underpaid, overworked, or absent. Riders could step into an open shaft, and children and workers were routinely maimed or killed when doors failed to close.
Alexander Miles, born in 1838 and working as a barber and elevator operator, lived these risks daily. Riding with his young daughter in a building where a shaft door had been left open, he saw how a moment’s inattention could turn an elevator into a death trap. 2.What the Automatic Door System Did
Miles’s 1887 patent described an apparatus mounted on the elevator car that interacted mechanically with each floor. As the car approached, belts and rollers on the car engaged fixtures near the floor opening, automatically unlatching and opening the doors when the car arrived. When the car left, the same movement triggered the doors to close and latch, locking off the shaft from the corridor.

The shaft could not stand open when the car was elsewhere, and the car could not be used without the doors cycling properly. 3.Black Authorship and the Patent Record
Because Black people were often prevented from gaining engineering titles or corporate posts, their inventions entered the record through patents and local business archives rather than through institutional histories. Miles, working outside the major elevator firms, patented his device under his own name, a rare case where a Black inventor was allowed to claim formal ownership.
Yet elevator histories still treat his apparatus as marginal, focusing instead on corporate developments by Otis and other white-led companies. The archive rejects the idea that a safety innovation is merely a “detail.” When a Black inventor solves the core hazard of a technology, that work is part of the technology’s origin story.
4.Lost Credit and Building Culture
As cities grew vertically, codes increasingly required automatic door devices and interlocks, embedding Miles’s principle into everyday architecture. Riders came to expect that walking up to an elevator door posed no risk of falling into a shaft. The cultural habit of trusting elevators rests on technical systems like Miles’s, yet the public does not know his name.
This disconnect between habit and authorship is characteristic of suppressed Black contributions in infrastructure and safety. The archive insists that every time an elevator door closes itself behind a rider, they are moving through a lineage of Black engineering that refused to accept preventable deaths, and that Alexander Miles’s work belongs at the center of that lineage.
The automatic elevator door belongs to the canon of world-changing safety inventions authored by Black engineers responding to lethal gaps in industrial design. The archive treats Miles’s work not as a footnote to the elevator, but as a decisive step that made vertical urban life workable without demanding constant vigilance from every rider. Miles stands with Granville Woods, Garrett Morgan and other Black inventors whose devices safeguarded railways, streets and workplaces, yet whose names rarely appear in architectural histories.
